What are the Types of Render?

With so many different types of rendering systems available on the market, it can be difficult to choose the correct type for your home. Keep on reading to better understand each type of render with its benefits to make a decision on what’s best for your home. Cement & Sand Render

Cement & sand render, also commonly known as concrete render, is one of the more cost-effective render types, making it a popular choice for those renovating on a budget. That being said, this type of render requires multiple coats, making it a labour-intensive process which typically increases the cost of application. As cement render isn’t flexible, it’s prone to cracks which may cause further issues down the line. If the cement cracks, water can enter and cause issues with dampness.

Acrylic Render

Acrylic render is similar to cement render but with an additional ingredient, acyclic, which is a type of plastic. This additional ingredient makes it stronger and more flexible than cement render, which will typically make it last longer once applied. Acrylic render is resistant to cracks which means you don’t have to worry about hairline cracks throughout your render. With a range of finishes available, such as smooth or textured ones, this is a great long-lasting render choice.

Silicone Render

Silicone render is typically one of the most expensive types of render but for a good reason. Silicon render is also commonly referred to as a ‘self-cleaning render’ as the mixture is waterproof, meaning it holds no water, resulting in less moisture and algae. It’s also relatively easy to apply, making it a preferred choice application for your rendering company of choice.  If you want a render which is low maintenance, looks great and you don’t mind investing a little more, then silicone render may be the right choice for you.

Mineral Render

Mineral render is a cost-effective render type that is fast drying, making it an ideal solution when working in conditions where extended drying times aren’t practical. This render type is commonly used on homes which have external wall insulation as it’s a breathable type of render. That being said, mineral render doesn’t have the same waterproof properties as the higher-end renders so it’s ideal to paint the exterior as this will add an extra layer of protection from the weather.

Lime Render

Lime render is typically used on older, historical properties as its breathable option which also enhances the natural beauty of a home. This render type is usually more difficult to apply than some other render types and it also usually requires a lime wash coat to complete the finish. Lime render typically lasts much longer than cement render and is more durable, but it typically costs more and takes longer to apply.

Monocouche Render

Monocouche is a higher-end render system for those with more of a budget. It’s one of the most durable render types and can last upwards of 25 years. It offers amazing thermal efficiency as it’s 15mm thick, and can be applied straight to brickwork with only one coat. It’s flexible and comes in many different colours, making it a great choice for those who want a render system that looks amazing and will last long.
